About T1 Lines

The T1 standard for data telecommunications was first developed by AT&T in the 1960’s as a method to be able to send additional data along a common 2 pair of copper wire. However, it wasn’t until the 1990’s that the market for T1 lines became competitive enough to allow prices to drop and demand to increase. The United States Government has been using T1 technology since at least 1984, along with major technology companies such as IBM.

Since T1 service is so dependable and trustworthy, the number of T1 lines being used in the United States has been increasing by at least 15% annually for the past decade.

T1 lines operate by maintaining a single open circuit at all times, as opposed to traditional telephone services that reuse the same line for many connections through a process known as “switching.” This allows for guaranteed available bandwidth for the businesses, which more traditional technologies cannot offer.
