Email Etiquette: Using Your Best Judgment at Work
There are a variety of things that you should do when composing, sending, and communicating through email, but there are also a variety of things that should be avoided all together. When it comes to using your email for personal use, such as for forwarding extraneous messages or messages to friends and family, there are a few stipulations.
First of all, when you send emails from home to catch up with a friend or loved one that is fine, it is your personal computer and your personal time. But, when you decide to send these sorts of emails from your place of employment it can be frowned upon. A quick question that you may need to ask someone may be ok, but an email that contains something inappropriate is not. Here are some don’ts that apply especially in the workplace: do not discuss confidential info over an email, do not type in all capital letters, do not use offensive language, and do not type in long sentences.
This list could go on. Basically it is best to use your paramount judgment.
When it comes to forwarding emails it is best to not forward chain letters. No one has time for these. It is also best to avoid forwarding anything that may insult the recipients.
The workplace is for just that, work, not for personal emailing. Make sure to use your judgment and email proper messages at the proper times.
